Northrop ATFB

In the early 1990s, Flight International published the three-view of a previously unseen Northrop project. The intention was to develope a new version of Lockheed Blackbird aircraft as a multi-role supersonic advanced tactical fighter-bomber (or ATFB).

The Flight drawing was fine, but presumably already a reinterpretation of the original illustration, published in the AIAA paper Conceptual Design of, an Advanced Tactical Fighter-Bomber System (1993). However, the original drawing from the paper was lousy as the copy was very bad, so it occurred to me it would be nice to have it entirely redrawn.

Here is the reworked three-view. I've tried to stick to the original as much as possible (thickness of lines, fonts, etc.). If anyone sees something else that could be improved, please let me know.

  • Wouldn't it most likely have had "USAF" on the right wing as opposed to "U S AIR FORCE"? (famvburg)

My comments:

Absolutely. As I said, I tried to stick to the image in the first post as much as I could. If I had done this plan my way, it would have been treated a lot differently!  ;)
