The multiple troubles that were experienced in the development of Rockwell International's XFV-12A VSTOL fighter for the U.S. Navy led to a redefinition of the aircraft's configuration and resulted in the much simpler, STOL FV-12B Vanquish.

The prototype lost out to the proposed Hawker/McDonnell Douglas AV-16 Advanced Harrier, which itself led to the AV-8B Harrier II.
