As a naval variant of the F-117A was originally planned, with an option from the U.S. Marines to receive a batch of 20 aircraft, one of the Air Force Nighthawks was temporarily modified for a Marine evaluation which lasted six months during 1989. The prefix "M", which is not normally used by the DoD, was applied to the aircraft to indicate that special evaluation.
